Applicants for the Louis M. Herman Research Scholarship can tap into the BCSS offerings, coupling their investigations with the station’s ocean observatory data and research logistics assistance.

Dr. Louis M. Herman, an Emeritus Professor renowned for his pioneering studies on dolphin sensory perception, cognition, and humpback whale behavior, left an indelible mark on marine mammal science. To carry forward his legacy, the Louis M. Herman Research Scholarship welcomes applications every two years, with the upcoming 2024 award set at USD $6,000. 

The Bazaruto Archipelago and surroundings are home to four species of dolphin, humpback whales, false killer whales, orcas and pilot whales.

Located on Benguerra Island, BCSS field station provides high quality and comfortable lodgings and facilities for scientists and researchers from around the globe.

The eligibility criteria for the scholarship include graduate students and recent Masters or PhD graduates within the last three years. Mozambican nationals are strongly encouraged to get in touch with BCSS to investigate co-funding opportunities.  

The application deadline for the Louis M. Herman Research Scholarship is Monday, February 5, 2024 (midnight UTC).
