Job opportunity: Kisawa Sanctuary & BCSS are looking for a Sustainability Manager

Kisawa Sanctuary and Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies (BCSS) are looking for a Sustainability Manager to join our teams. The Sustainability Manager will be concerned with monitoring Kisawa’s and BCSS practices with the intent to minimize the environmental imprint. The Sustainability Manager will lead the execution of strategic and operational action plans and will implement environmental policies and procedures developed alone and/or in conjunction with a Sustainability Consultant, following specific tasks stipulated in the Strategy. The Sustainability Manager will liaise with the BCSS closely on best practices regarding energy consumption, resource conservation, waste management and recycling, transportation, and sustainable architecture. The Sustainability manager will receive on-the-job training in their role for onsite specific aspects, but it is expected to bring his/her expertise, pro-activism, and energy to the position.

Hours: full-time

Location: Kisawa Sanctuary, Benguerra Island, Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique.
Start date: January/February 2023

Remuneration: Competitive fees and incentives based on experience

About Kisawa Sanctuary

Kisawa Sanctuary is a new concept in luxury hospitality located on Benguerra Island, Mozambique. Sitting on 5 km of pristine tropical coastline, Kisawa has been created to ensure maximum privacy, with minimum impact on the natural environment, showcasing a rich design culture that celebrates craft and heritage. The property is located across 300-hectares of beachfront calm and coastal forest in a national marine park off the east coast of Mozambique. 17 individually designed bungalows across 11 Residences sit within sheltered coves among the sand dunes overlooking the expanse of the Indian Ocean. About Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies

The Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies (BCSS) is an independent, non-profit organization with a mission to protect and support the fragile ecosystems of the Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique. As a solar-powered field research facility in a remote area, BCSS operates on a zero-waste strategy. BCSS provides professional logistical and scientific services in the ground and offshore. The Bazaruto Archipelago National Park (BANP) is home to some of the richest yet least explored subtropical ecosystems. BCSS is committed to better document and protect these pristine habitats via its in-house projects and national/international initiatives while adhering to the best sustainability practices and environmental policies.

The Position

The Sustainability Manager will liaise with the BCSS closely on best practices regarding energy consumption, resource conservation, waste management and recycling, transportation, and sustainable architecture. The Sustainability manager will receive on-the-job training in their role for onsite specific aspects, but it is expected to bring his/her expertise, pro-activism, and energy to the position.

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • To efficiently implement practices and execute sustainability strategies developed on his/her own, and/or in conjunction with a Sustainability Consultant across the departments, including supplies, kitchen, F&B, housekeeping, maintenance, guest activities, etc. by collaborating with various departments to incorporate sustainability practices and set environmental conservation goals.
  • Supervision of employees working on sustainability projects.
  • Implementing changes in Kisawa and BCSS strategy to make the work environment and practices more eco-friendly, communicating these changes to management with recommendations.
  • Monitoring property’s sustainability performance.
  • Analyzing and auditing operational activities that are part of the sustainability strategy (i.e. the process of food waste elimination).
  • Leading training sessions and workshops on sustainability practices and policies for Kisawa and BCSS employees.
  • To ensure that hotel and the station operate in an environmentally and socially responsible way.
  • Creating metrics to track progress towards goals such as or water conservation or food waste reduction.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Strong leadership abilities to effectively supervise and guide a multitude of staff and stakeholders, with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
  • At least Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, sustainability science, compliance, environmental policy, or a similar field, OR at least 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • To be passionate about creating and implementing changes that will have a ripple effect on the hotel operations.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
