A Guide to Bazaruto’s Seasons: When to See Whale Sharks, Humpback Whales and Manta Rays

Seasonal ocean conditions shape every marine encounter in the Bazaruto Archipelago. This blog acts as a guide to help you discover the best time to visit based on your interests, BCSS’s long-term wildlife observations, Ocean Observatory data, and marine research.

The Ocean Never Stands Still

When people think about seasons, they usually think about changing air temperatures or rainfall.

In the ocean, however, seasons are driven by a far more dynamic combination of environmental processes. Ocean currents shift, sea surface and sea floor temperatures fluctuate, prevailing winds change direction, and nutrient-rich waters move through the marine environment. Together, these processes influence where marine animals feed, breed, migrate and spend their time.

For visitors to the Bazaruto Archipelago, this means that no two months beneath the surface are ever exactly the same.

Some seasons bring migrating humpback whales from Antarctic feeding grounds. Others provide the warm, productive waters favoured by whale sharks or the plankton-rich conditions that attract giant reef manta rays. Even resident species such as dugongs, green turtles and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins respond to subtle seasonal changes in habitat conditions and food availability.

So, rather than asking, “When is the best time to visit Bazaruto?”, a better question is:

“What marine life would you like to experience?”

How BCSS Understands the Seasons

Much of what we know about marine seasonality comes from decades of continuous scientific observation.

At BCSS, this understanding is built through Africa’s first permanent Ocean Observatory, long-term wildlife monitoring programmes, scientific diving surveys, underwater biodiversity assessments, environmental monitoring and thousands of wildlife observations collected throughout the year.

Our seasonal wildlife calendars combine these long-term datasets to reveal consistent patterns in species occurrence, while recognising that wildlife remains influenced by changing environmental conditions and natural variability.

This means the calendar below isn’t based on occasional sightings or anecdotal observations – it’s informed by years of scientific monitoring in the greater Bazaruto seascape.

What Drives Seasonal Marine Life?

Marine wildlife doesn’t follow the calendar, it follows the ocean.

Seasonal changes in sea surface temperature, currents and nutrient availability influence plankton productivity, which forms the foundation of the marine food web. When environmental conditions become favourable, they create opportunities for different species to feed, migrate or reproduce.

Some animals undertake extraordinary migrations spanning thousands of kilometres. Others remain in the archipelago throughout the year but change where they feed, socialise or rest depending on local conditions.

Some of the most important environmental drivers monitored by BCSS include:

  • Sea surface and sea floor temperatures
  • Ocean currents
  • Wind direction and strength
  • Rainfall and freshwater input
  • Nutrient availability
  • Ocean productivity
  • Underwater visibility
  • Wave exposure

Even relatively small changes in these environmental conditions can influence which species are most commonly encountered during a particular season.

Seasonal changes in ocean conditions  are driven by shifts in sea surface temperature, currents and nutrient availability. 

Why Understanding Seasonality Matters

Seasonality is about far more than planning the perfect dive trip.

For marine scientists, understanding when and where species appear provides valuable insight into migration patterns, breeding behaviour, habitat use and ecosystem health. Long-term datasets also help researchers detect changes that may occur over time as ocean conditions shift.

For visitors, these same observations provide a practical way to plan a trip around the marine life they hope to experience—whether that’s photographing humpback whales, freediving alongside whale sharks, or contributing to ongoing marine research through BCSS’s Scientific Ocean Safaris and Scientific Training Program.

The following seasonal guide uses BCSS’s long-term wildlife observations to explain when some of the Bazaruto Archipelago’s most iconic marine species are most commonly encountered, and the environmental conditions that influence their presence.

A Seasonal Guide to Bazaruto’s Marine Wildlife

Every season in the Bazaruto Archipelago offers something different. Although wildlife can never be guaranteed, BCSS’s long-term observations reveal clear seasonal patterns that help researchers, and visitors, better understand when different species are most commonly encountered.

Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus)

October – April

As the world’s largest fish, whale sharks are among the Bazaruto Archipelago’s most sought-after marine encounters.

Unlike humpback whales, whale sharks do not follow predictable annual migration routes between breeding and feeding grounds. Instead, their movements are largely driven by environmental conditions – particularly ocean productivity and the availability of plankton.

BCSS’s long-term wildlife observations show that whale sharks are most frequently encountered between October and April, when warmer sea temperatures and productive feeding conditions create favourable habitat. Although sightings remain possible outside this period, encounters are generally most reliable during these warmer months.

This close relationship between whale sharks and ocean productivity makes them an important species for researchers studying how environmental change influences marine wildlife throughout the Western Indian Ocean.

Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae)

June – October (peak sightings July through September)

Each austral winter, humpback whales arrive in the waters surrounding the Bazaruto Archipelago as part of one of the world’s longest mammal migrations.

Travelling thousands of kilometres from Antarctic feeding grounds, they migrate north into warmer tropical waters to breed, give birth and nurse their calves before beginning the return journey south.

BCSS’s long-term observations show that humpback whales are most commonly encountered between June and October, with sightings typically peaking from July through September. Although southbound migration begins towards the end of October, some individuals may remain in Mozambican waters into November before continuing south.

Giant Reef Manta Rays (Mobula alfredi)

February – August (peak sightings between April – July)

Giant reef manta rays are among the most graceful animals encountered in the Bazaruto Archipelago, often appearing where ocean currents concentrate plankton into productive feeding areas.

According to BCSS’s long-term observations, giant reef manta rays are most frequently encountered between February and August, with sightings generally peaking between April and July.

Although manta rays may occasionally be encountered outside this period, seasonal changes in currents, plankton availability and water movement strongly influence where and when they are observed.

This season is ideal for:

  • Encountering giant reef manta rays
  • Pelagic diving
  • Underwater photography
  • Experiencing productive reef ecosystems

Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops aduncus).

Year-Round

Unlike migratory whales, many of the dolphins found in the Bazaruto Archipelago remain in the region throughout the year.

The Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) and Indian Ocean humpback dolphin (Sousa plumbea) are regularly encountered by BCSS researchers and visitors alike. While sightings are possible in every season, behaviour, habitat use and group composition often change in response to shifting ocean conditions and prey availability.

Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas & Caretta caretta)

Year-Round

Sea turtles are an important part of the Bazaruto Archipelago’s marine ecosystems and can be encountered throughout the year.

The green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) are among the species regularly recorded by BCSS. Depending on the season, visitors may observe turtles feeding on seagrass meadows, resting on coral reefs or moving between different habitats within the archipelago.

Although their presence is relatively consistent, seasonal changes influence behaviour, habitat use and reproductive activity, providing valuable insights into the health of the wider ecosystem.

Dugongs (Dugong dugon)

Year-Round (although naturally elusive)

The Bazaruto Archipelago supports one of the last viable dugong populations in the Western Indian Ocean, making every sighting especially significant.

Unlike many of the region’s larger marine animals, dugongs are resident throughout the year. Their distribution is closely linked to healthy seagrass meadows, where they spend much of their time feeding.

Because dugongs are naturally elusive and occur at relatively low densities, sightings are never guaranteed. However, their continued presence highlights the importance of protecting the archipelago’s seagrass ecosystems and maintaining long-term monitoring programmes.

The Ocean Observatory: Building a Long-Term Picture

Every wildlife encounter recorded by BCSS contributes to a growing body of scientific knowledge.   • How do ocean temperatures affect the distribution of marine megafauna?
  • How might long-term environmental change influence these seasonal patterns in the future?

These questions cannot be answered through occasional surveys alone. They require consistent observations collected across seasons and years.

By building this long-term record, BCSS is developing an increasingly detailed picture of the Bazaruto Archipelago and its role within the Western Indian Ocean, while creating the datasets needed to identify changes in ocean conditions, species distributions and migration patterns over time.
