BCSS is seeking an experienced professional to join our team as Station Manager at the BCSS Ocean Observatory in the Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique.
As BCSS continues to expand its scientific, conservation, and training programmes, this position will strengthen on-site leadership and coordination in Bazaruto. The role is central to the organisation’s long-term institutional development and supports the continued growth of research and conservation initiatives in one of the Western Indian Ocean’s most significant marine ecosystems.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Science and Environmental Strategy and the senior management team to lead and manage operations at the station while supporting the development of BCSS’s research and conservation activities.

About BCSS
BCSS is an independent, non-profit organization with a mission to protect and support the fragile ecosystems of the Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique.
BCSS runs the first permanent Ocean Observatory in the Indian Ocean working on multi-ecosystem time series with an open-data policy.
As a solar-powered field research facility in a remote area, BCSS operates on a zero-waste strategy and welcomes students and scientists who wish to immerse themselves in a unique experience taking part in internship programs as well as world-leading research.
BCSS provides professional logistical and scientific services on the ground and offshore. The greater Bazaruto seascape is home to some of the richest yet least explored subtropical ecosystems and wildlife — from dugongs and migrating humpback whales to coral reefs and mangrove forests.
BCSS is committed to better documenting and protecting these pristine habitats through in-house projects and national and international initiatives.
The Role
The Station Manager will oversee the day-to-day management of BCSS operations in Mozambique while supporting the expansion of scientific programmes, partnerships, and conservation initiatives.
Working closely with the Director of Science and Environmental Strategy and the senior management team, the Station Manager will coordinate research activities, manage operations and logistics, and represent BCSS in Mozambique with partners, government, and the wider scientific community.
The position is aimed at Mozambican and South African nationals; however, all nationalities are welcome to apply.

Major Responsibilities
The Station Manager will:
Lead the BCSS operation in Mozambique in consultation with the Director of Science and Environment and the global brand team.
Act as the visible representative of BCSS in Mozambique, working with the Finance, HR and legal departments.
Represent BCSS to the Government of Mozambique, partners, the press, and other internal and external stakeholders.
Oversee day-to-day research and operations, as well as participate where needed in execution activities.
Manage projects related to plant and equipment to ensure operational performance and longevity.
Oversee CAPEX projects and major procurement, as well as board and annual reporting duties.
Link to Kisawa, the BCSS sister property, in terms of shared services and strategic support.
Ensure station legal status, insurance and permitting remain up to date.
Ensure the safety of the team and the integrity of the facility.
Develop relationships with clients, suppliers and new research partners.
Contribute to strategy development for business growth alongside the commercial department.
Oversee operational management of the station including stock control, procurement, logistics and financial management.

Minimum Requirements
Candidates should meet the following minimum requirements:
A minimum of a master’s degree in research, environment, conservation, wildlife, natural resources or another relevant subject (PhD an advantage).
Extensive experience leading and managing teams.
Demonstrated experience developing, managing and overseeing the implementation of research programs, preferably in Mozambique.
At least 8 years relevant work experience, with personal knowledge and experience of NGO management and issues, and field projects a distinct advantage.
Demonstrated capacity in financial planning and management.
Commitment to BCSS’s mission.
English language proficiency required.
Scientific publication records an advantage.
Excellent planning, communications, reporting and organisational skills.
